Pediatric Teen Suicide Prevention

April 26, 2017

We have heard from some families in recent weeks a mix of rave reviews and significant concerns about the Netflix Series, “13 Reasons Why”. The show is frequently being watched by teens and “tweens” who cognitively and emotionally may not be ready or able to understand the serious topics (e.g. suicide, rape, etc) being discussed. Educators and mental health providers have raised concerns that teenagers may perceive the plots as a “glorification” of suicide.

We highly suggest that all parents of middle and high schoolers ask their children what they know about the show. Even if they haven’t watched it, they may have heard about it from peers. Depending on your child’s level of maturity, you may opt to watch the series with them and be prepared for it to lead to some important dialogue. See this link for some talking points.

As always, if you have any concerns about your child’s mental or emotional health, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s provider at PMA.
